About this work
New England Skiing, New Hampshire 1955
Close up: a hand in the sleeve of a heavy wool coat holds a pair of leather ski boots clamped in a metal boot carrier with a handle. The laces hang loose. On the left, skis lean with their bindings against a rack, and in the background, out of focus in the snow, a skier walks past with his skis over his shoulder.
A skier carrying his boots, in New Hampshire, 1955. Slim Aarons leaves the person himself largely out of the frame; you see a coat flap, a trouser leg and a hand. That makes the object the main subject. The boots, glossy in the black and white, hang exactly in the middle, and the blurred figures behind them make clear that the skiing happens somewhere else. This picture is about the equipment.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
