About this work

New York Apartments, 1953

A brick apartment building steps upward in terraces: on each floor the facade recedes and a balcony with a low balustrade appears. There are garden chairs, planters and a small conifer, and above some windows hang striped awnings. At the back right an older facade with ornate window frames is visible, darker and more austere than the rest.

In 1953 Slim Aarons photographed an apartment block in New York. The building is stepped, so that every floor's flats come with a balcony. Without sky, street or people it becomes a study in repetition: the diagonals of the balustrades, the rows of windows and the black and white of brick and mortar, with an awning or a plant here and there as a sign that someone lives there.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
