About this work
Henry Fonda, 1955
A man in shorts sits on the edge of an orange raft, his legs in the turquoise water, laughing to the side. Otherwise there is only sea and a deep blue sky with small white clouds. At upper right a plane flies low overhead; on the horizon lie a flat vessel and a ship. The sun falls hard on his tanned shoulders.
American actor Henry Fonda was photographed in 1955 on a rubber dinghy during the filming of Mister Roberts, in which he starred: a comedy-drama set in the Pacific during World War II, directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy. The picture works through the emptiness around him. The star sits small and to the left in the frame, the plane is smaller still, and the rest is color: two bands of blue and a patch of orange.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
