About this work
Las Vegas Luxury, Sands Hotel 1954
Looking straight down into a swimming pool. On a floating mattress lies a woman in a striped swimsuit under a big straw hat, beside her a bowl of fruit and a tray. A waiter in a white jacket stands in the water and hands her a cup. Around them the sunlight draws a net of ripples on the bottom.
Austrian actress Mara Lane had a waiter serve her in the pool of the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas in 1954. Slim Aarons photographed it from directly above, and that vantage point makes it almost a graphic work: the net of light on the water fills the entire square frame, the long shadow on the left doubles the scene, and the mattress lies like an island in the middle.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
