About this work
Eden Rock, St. Barts, March 1973
From a hill you look over palms and scrub to a bay of turquoise water. In the middle of the bay a rocky peninsula juts out with a red-roofed house on it. Farther back, surf breaks on a reef, a few sailboats lie and sail, and green mountains rise under a deep blue sky with cumulus clouds.
The mansion of Remy de Haenen stood on a peninsula in the bay of St. Jean, at Eden Rock on the Caribbean island of St. Barts, where Slim Aarons photographed it in March 1973. The house is now a hotel. What stands out is how small it appears in the frame: it is the subject, but the landscape gets the room, with the branches on the left as a frame and colors running from green through turquoise to blue.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
