About this work
Summer Home, Cavallo, Corsica, August 1984
From above you see a house that almost merges into the rocks: low buildings with vaulted stone roofs, linked by stairs and terraces, among large granite boulders and green scrub. Below runs a narrow inlet of clear green water, where two white motorboats lie and someone stands in a small boat. Next to a wooden jetty stands a white parasol.
In August 1984 this was the summer home of Prince Victor Emmanuel and Princess Marina of Savoy on Cavallo, Corsica. Architect Savin Couelle designed it to blend into the island's rocky landscape. The high vantage point shows how well that worked: roofs and boulders share the same round forms and the same gray color, and only the boats, the cars and the parasol reveal where the house begins.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
