About this work

Decking By The Sea, Angra dos Reis, January 1988

From above you see a large wooden deck by the sea: a swimming pool with light blue water, a thatched canopy, white garden chairs and loungers. People in swimwear sit at small tables or lie in the sun, a woman with a tennis racket walks across the planks, and two figures in white stand by the pool. On the right, waves break on brown rocks.

In January 1988 people were sunbathing on a deck above the sea near Angra dos Reis, in Brazil. Slim Aarons chose a high vantage point and let the deck's railing run through the picture as a straight line. On one side lies the ordered world of planks, chairs and a pool, on the other the restless water among the rocks.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
