About this work
Carmen Sevilla, 1957
A young woman reclines on a red sofa, one arm bent above her head, her head against a red velvet cushion. She wears a pink pleated dress with thin straps and a gold bracelet. Dark curls, red lips, a slight smile; she looks straight into the camera from below. Nearly everything in the frame is red or pink.
The Spanish actress and singer Carmen Sevilla, photographed by Slim Aarons in 1957. The caption says no more than that, and the image needs no more. It works through color: sofa, cushion, dress and lips all lie in the same warm family of red, so that the one thing that stands out is her face, with the dark eyes exactly where you look.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
