About this work
Holiday In Boston, North Shore, circa 1959
Along the deck of a brigantine you look forward, the masts and rigging slanting out of the frame. On a green cushion three women in bikinis sit in the sun, and farther along another sits on the deckhouse. A man in black stands in the middle of the deck, a boy in checked shorts stands at the rail. High in the rigging someone climbs upward.
Henry B. Cabot Jr., the man in black, sailed around 1959 aboard the brigantine Black Pearl of Barclay (Buzzy) H Warburton III, off the North Shore near Boston, around the harbors of Manchester and Marblehead in Essex County, Massachusetts. Slim Aarons photographed along the length of the ship, so that the deck runs through the picture as a diagonal: the people on the left, on the right the sea with the white sails of other yachts in the distance.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
