About this work
Party Girl, Sugarbush, Vermont, April 1960
In the middle of a crowded, dark room a woman laughs broadly, one hand in her blonde hair, a glass in the other. She wears a white blouse with black dots and puffed sleeves, a turquoise necklace and black trousers. Around her stand guests in tweed and checked wool; on the left a man laughs along, a cigarette in his hand.
American socialite and fashion writer Nan Kempner relaxed in April 1960 after a day on the slopes at the Sugarbush Mountain ski resort in Vermont. There is no snow to be seen here. The light picks her out of the darkness while the others half disappear into shadow or at the edge of the frame; as a result the whole party seems to revolve around that one laugh.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
