About this work
Financial Planning ?, New York, circa 1965
A man in a dark suit and tie stands in a construction pit, a white helmet with the letters C.M.B. on his head. In one hand he holds an unrolled blueprint. Behind him steel girders run through the darkness, and above them office towers rise with rows of lit windows. He looks at the camera gravely.
Around 1965 Slim Aarons photographed financier David Rockefeller in a safety helmet among the steel girders in the excavation for the Chase Manhattan Plaza, near Wall Street. The darkness of the pit does the work: the face, the white helmet and the blueprint are the only light areas, and the skyscrapers above show what this hole in the ground is meant to grow into.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
