About this work
Al Fresco Tea, Harvati, July 1961
Under tall pines a table with a white tablecloth stands on the grass. An older man in a green suit and white shoes sits on the left, a woman in a striped skirt in the middle, a young man in a white shirt on the right, a red setter beside him. A servant in a green jacket and bow tie brings a dish. A water basin glitters in the back.
Colonel Dimitris Levidis enjoyed a meal in the open air in Harvati in July 1961 with his wife and son. Slim Aarons places the table in shade and the garden path behind it in full light. That contrast gives depth: in front the cool, dark green shelter of the trees, at the back the sunny steps and flower boxes, and the standing servant exactly on the border between the two.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
