About this work
Slim Arrives, circa 1955
On the steps of an airplane a man waves broadly, grinning, a slip of paper in his raised hand. He wears a light raincoat open over a dark suit, a scarf loose around his neck, a bag on a strap over his shoulder and a full bag in his other hand. Behind him the fuselage gleams with its round windows, and lettering is visible on the steps.
The caption says photographer Slim Aarons arrived by plane around 1955. The picture revolves around the staircase: the railing and the steps with their PAA lettering lead the eye diagonally down from the doorway at the top to the man who has just arrived and already has his hand raised. His broad grin and the waving paper are the only loose element in a tight, angular composition.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
