About this work
Coral Beach, Bermuda 1977
From a high bank you look across a long, pale beach curving toward the horizon. The water is turquoise along the surf and darkens to deep blue farther out, under a deep blue sky with long streaks of white cloud. Small figures walk and swim scattered along the shore; in the foreground are pink flowering shrubs, a palm and a low stone wall with a red railing.
A view of Coral Beach in Bermuda, 1977. Aarons takes a high, angled position above the beach, so that the shoreline cuts through the image as a diagonal, with beach on one side and sea on the other. The people are so small that they mainly give scale: without them you would not know how wide the beach is or how far the blue runs on.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
