About this work
Katharine Hepburn, Montego Bay 1953
A gray-green open sports car stands still along the boulevard. Two women sit in it: one in a straw hat and a light blue jacket, the other leaning over the windshield. Behind them the road runs past a white beach and turquoise water. A woman on the sidewalk aims her camera at the car, and a man in a red checked shirt watches from the edge.
Montego Bay, Jamaica, 1953: film star Katharine Hepburn drove along the water there in a Singer Nine Roadster with Irene Mayer Selznick. The picture works through its onlookers. A woman photographs the car, a man at the edge watches, another walks past with a bag. The two in the car are the center of a small scene on the street, and Aarons's camera is only one of several.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
