About this work
North Conway Sleigh, New Hampshire 1955
A dark brown horse pulls an open sleigh through the snow, over the tracks of earlier rides. On the sleigh sits a handful of skiers in winter coats, their skis upright between them; one wears a bright red jacket. Behind them stand bare trees with snow on the branches, a house with a white roof and a row of dark pines.
In 1955 this open sleigh took skiers to Cranmore Mountain in New Hampshire. Aarons photographs from the side and slightly from above, so that horse and sleigh move as one long band through the white field, to the left and out of the frame. The shadows of the trees lie in blue stripes on the snow. In that cool light the red reins and the red jacket are the only warm color.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
