About this work
C.Z. And Guest, Palm Beach circa 1955
Two women in pale pink summer dresses by a rectangular pool in front of a white villa with columns. One stands, with a small white dog in her arm. The other sits on the edge with a broad white hat in her lap and a string of pearls, next to a black statue of a reclining dog. In the still water the facade and the palms are reflected.
Circa 1955, C. Z. Guest, Mrs. Winston F. C. Guest, posed with Joanne Connolly, right, by the Grecian-temple pool of Villa Artemis, her ocean-front estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Both wore pale pink sun dresses. The photograph rhymes with itself: two dresses in the same color, a live white dog and a black statue of a dog, and the white house that appears a second time in the water.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
