About this work

Saint-Tropez Seafront, 1970

Seen from above, a crowd drifts along the quay past a row of yachts moored stern to the wharf. Gangways reach across the water, flags hang limp from the masts and lampposts with green signs run in a line toward the back. Farther away cars stand on the pier, and beyond lies the sea, flat and gray.

The seafront of Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera, September 1970. Aarons stands high and lets the picture run vertically, so that the yachts on the left and the strollers on the right pull toward the horizon as two parallel streams. The lampposts form the border. On one side people sit on deck, on the other people look at them, and the photograph gives both groups equal room.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
