About this work
Hotel Villa Igra Pool, Taormina 1975
Around a pool of clear blue water, guests lie on loungers under blue parasols. In the foreground a woman in a bikini sunbathes on an orange cushion; on the right a small child in a white hooded bathrobe walks along the edge. Behind the water stand gnarled pines and palms, and between them the ocher facade of the hotel.
Guests by the pool of Hotel Villa Igra in Taormina, Sicily, August 1975. The picture works through distance: nobody poses, everyone is absorbed in themselves, and Aarons stays at the edge like one of the guests. Apart from a single swimmer everyone lies still in the sun; only the child in the bathrobe walks around the pool. That one walking figure gives the heat a measure.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
