About this work
Lech Ice Bar, 1960
Skiers in sweaters and caps sit close together at a long bar in the snow, behind a counter full of bottles, cans, plates and a bowl of oranges. In front, rows of upturned glasses stand beside a checked dish towel. On the right stands a man in a red cap. Behind the group rise two hotels with wooden facades, the right one with green shutters, and a snowy mountain peak.
The Ice Bar of Hotel Krone in Lech, Austria, 1960, with Hotel Pfefferkorn and Hotel Tannbergerhof in the background. Aarons photographs from the end of the counter, so that the bottles and glasses stand in front and the guests behind them sit squeezed together as at a long kitchen table. The village forms the back wall. The names of the two hotels are legible on the facades, like a set announcing itself.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
