About this work
At The Von Pantzs, Marbella 1967
At the edge of a pool stands a laughing woman in a yellow bikini with a pink turban, one hand on her hip. Opposite her stands a woman in a flowered white swim cap and sarong, half turned away. Beyond them a man in navy swim trunks and a woman in a red bikini stand on the path; on the left, white garden chairs sit under a fringed parasol.
Bathers by the pool at El Rincon, the home of Baron and Baroness von Pantz in Marbella, Spain, August 1967. Aarons sets the two women in the foreground as brackets around the picture: one looks at the camera, the other almost away from us. Between them, small and in the middle, the second couple stands watching. So the photograph reads from front to back, from one couple to the other.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
