About this work
Viscountess In Ibiza, 1978
Jacqueline de Ribes sits on a whitewashed bench with sand-colored cushions, her legs stretched toward a wicker coffee table, looking away out of the frame. She wears a light dress with short sleeves and rests a glass on her knee; sunglasses dangle from her other hand. On the left a vase of white and pink flowers stands on a stack of books, a dark wooden door behind it.
Viscountess Jacqueline de Ribes, society hostess and fashion designer, rested on the terrace of her house in Ibiza in September 1978. The photograph is built from planes: the white wall, the white bench, the beige cushions and a dress in almost the same shade. Everything fades away except her profile and the line of her legs, which run diagonally across the frame to the table.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
