About this work

Molly Wilmot's Pool, Palm Beach 1982

A long pool of clear blue water lies close to the sea; only urns and a strip of grass separate it from the beach. On the edge a woman in a bikini sits beside a black sphinx on a stone plinth; a man swims. At the back guests in white stand around a striped pavilion with white curtains, and beyond rise tall palms against a deep blue sky.

Guests relaxed around the pool at the home of Molly Wilmot in Palm Beach, Florida, in April 1982. What gives the image its tension is the side-by-side of two kinds of water: the bright, rectangular blue of the pool and the sea behind it, darker and without an edge. The black statue and the row of urns with round little shrubs mark the border, like a hedge standing between the two.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
