About this work
Earl Of Lichfield, 1968
Four young people pose under a pergola of reed and beams, framed by pink-flowered climbers. On the right a curly-haired man in a lilac shirt and yellow trousers leans on the wall, camera in hand. On the left a woman in a green top, in the middle one in a red and blue dress with a headscarf, and in front a blonde woman in pink lies on the stone step.
Photographer Patrick Anson, the fifth Earl of Lichfield, posed in Italy in 1968 with a Hasselblad, together with Ines Torlonia, Marina Lante della Rovere and Signoria Gancia. The image reverses the roles: the man who usually photographs now stands on the other side of the lens, holding his camera like a prop. Each of the four stands or lies at a different height, so the group forms a staircase from the ground up to the pergola.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
