About this work
Hovgard Home, Carefree 1973
Huge boulders lie stacked on top of one another next to a kidney-shaped pool, as if someone had just set them down. A woman in a yellow bikini stands at the edge, one swimmer lies in the water, and on the right guests sit at small tables in the sun. Behind the pergola of the house the desert spreads flat to the mountains on the horizon.
Bouldereign, Carl Hovgard's home in Carefree, Arizona, was built around the boulders on a desert site; the picture dates from January 1973. Aarons stands high above the terrace, so the boulders fill half the frame and the pool with its guests lies small beside them. The plain on the right runs on empty to the horizon. Scale becomes the subject: how little room the people take up beside what was already there.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
