About this work
The Ali Children, 1980
Three children stand side by side against a white wall, under a wrought-iron lantern. They wear flat gray hats with broad brims, short black jackets, white shirts and brown boots. The two on the left have striped trousers with a green sash, the child on the right leather chaps with fringes and studs. Each has a hand on the hip or on the chest.
August 1980: from left to right Princess Rajwa Ali, Princess Basma Ali and Prince Bin Ali, in riding clothes in Spanish style. Aarons has them pose like grown-up riders, and that is where the tension of the photograph lies. The poses are serious and rehearsed and their gazes go straight into the lens, but the bodies are those of children. Against the bare white wall the three stand out like figures on a frieze.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
