About this work
Zermatt Skiing, March 1968
A terrace high in the mountains is packed with skiers in jackets, hats and sweaters. Skis and poles hung with streamers lean against the railing, and a scarf and a red-and-white cloth hang from a post. Behind the crowd a snowy valley descends with larches and chalets, and above it a pointed, snow-covered peak stands sharp against a deep blue sky.
Skiers in Zermatt, March 1968, says the caption. This upright composition divides the image in two: below, the bustle of people, skis and streamers; above, the stillness of snow and rock. The peak stands directly above the crowd without having anything to do with it. It is precisely this distance between the party on the terrace and the mountain above that gives the photograph its tension.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
