About this work
Mazatlan Seaside, January 1984
A seaside pool is full of yellow air mattresses, with bathers on them in a long row, on their stomachs or their backs. Others sit on the edge or stand in the water. Beyond the pool lie a strip of beach and dark rocks in a blue bay, where a motorboat trails a wake and a parachute hangs above the water. On the right a thatched roof sticks out.
According to the caption, these are holidaymakers at a seaside pool in Mazatlan, Mexico, in January 1984. Pool and sea sit directly above each other in the frame, two shades of blue, separated by a narrow band of sand. That makes the pool look like a roped-off piece of the bay. The yellow air mattresses bring a rhythm to it, like punctuation between the bodies, and keep the eye on the people.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
