About this work
Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, September 1978
Across a bay of clear turquoise water, sailboats move among round boulders. A windsurfer stands on a board with a white-and-yellow sail; farther out sail a catamaran with yellow hulls and a small dinghy, and a white boat lies to the right. On the far side a row of white buildings and scattered houses sit against a green hill. In the foreground, shrubs push into the frame.
The caption speaks of sailboats on the waters of the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia, in September 1978. Aarons looks down from above and from behind the undergrowth, so that the leaves at the bottom act as a border. The sails stand like white triangles on the water, each at its own distance from the others. The shallow water shows the seabed, and so the bay looks more like a swimming pool than open sea.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
