About this work
Taking the Plunge, Lyford Cay 1962
Above the pool a diver hangs upside down in midair, arms toward the water, legs straight up. A swimmer watches from the water, and an empty diving board juts out in the foreground. On the lawn behind, guests lie on green loungers under white parasols, in front of a low white building. Above the trees stands a deep blue sky.
Slim Aarons also made this shot in 1962 at the pool of the Lyford Cay Club on New Providence Island in the Bahamas, whose building was designed by American architect Eldredge Snyder. Where the rest of the club lies resting, this picture freezes a single movement. The diver stands vertical in a composition otherwise made of horizontal lines: the pool, the building, the rows of loungers.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
