About this work
Director And Star, Venice 1952
On a stone bench against a weathered wall sits a bearded, curly-haired man in a white suit, looking off to one side. Beside him sit a young woman in a striped top and a blonde woman in a light skirt suit with pearls, speaking with her mouth open. Two more women sit on the right; in the foreground a man stands out of focus, back to the camera.
Orson Welles was in Venice in 1952, during a break in the filming of Othello, the film he directed and starred in. The caption does not say who the others on the bench are. The image works because nobody is posing: every head looks a different way, and the woman beside him seems caught in mid-sentence. The blurred back on the right puts the viewer just outside the group.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
