About this work
Ardizzone's House, Portofino July 1985
From above you look through the greenery at an orange villa built layer upon layer against the rocks, with blue sun awnings in front of the windows and red awnings above a terrace. At the bottom the house rests on a stone sea wall with an arched door. In the dark green water a small sailboat with a few people aboard glides just beneath the wall.
The caption names the view of Ardizzone's House, at the water's edge in Portofino, in July 1985. This upright shot looks steeply downward, so the house can be read from top to bottom: roofs, windows, terraces, wall, water. The boat is the last and smallest element in that sequence and gives the scale. The leaves in the foreground turn the viewer into someone peering down between the trees.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
