About this work
Adriatic Sailors, 1956
On the deck of a sailboat, seven young people sit and lie close together in matching sweaters with red, white and blue stripes, barefoot, in white pants and shorts. Two stand; the rest lie or lean against each other around a coil of rope. Above them a red-and-white striped sail billows, and signal flags flutter in the rigging.
Young holidaymakers from Milan went on a sailing trip on the Adriatic in 1956. The camera sits low on the deck and looks up with a wide-angle lens, so the edges of the image curve. A wooden spar cuts the image diagonally in half, and the stripes of the sweaters repeat those of the sail. That turns the young people into part of the ship, like a crew in uniform.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
