About this work
Ardissones House, Portofino 1977
From a terrace with a wrought-iron fence, overgrown with pink and red flowers, you look out over the sea. On the left an ochre-yellow house stands at the water's edge, half hidden among the trees, and a small tower rises high above the rocks. Sailboats lie on the water and a motorboat draws a white line. On the horizon a mountainous coast runs beneath cumulus clouds.
The caption dates this shot to 1977 and mentions the view over Ardissones House, at the water's edge in Portofino, Italy; it does not say which building that house is. The fence and flowers in the foreground put the viewer on the terrace, and from there the ochre house on the left is one of the things you see, alongside the sea, the boats and the coast. It is a view, not a portrait of a building.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
