About this work
Skiers At Sugarbush, Vermont, April 1960
Two skiers stand on a snowy ridge. One, in a navy-blue jacket and black pants, stands at the top with his poles spread wide; the other, in a cream knitted cardigan and sunglasses, is already gliding down the slope with one hand held out. Both wear a white hat with a pompom. Behind them a forest of snow-covered spruces stretches away into the haze.
Skiers on the slopes of the Sugarbush Resort in Vermont, April 1960, according to the caption. The shadow of the upper skier falls long and sharp across the snow and forms a third figure in the image, larger than the two real ones. Because the camera is low, both skiers are outlined against the sky rather than the mountain. The slope runs off at an angle and gives the image speed.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
