About this work
Corfu Picnic, 1987
In an olive grove stands a long wooden table laden with food: melons, a cut-open watermelon, bread, cheese, grapes and baskets of fruit on vine leaves. Around it sit and stand five adults in white and summery colors, and a small girl. A man with a mustache reaches for a dish. On the right sits a sheepdog; at the back are a ladder against a tree and a laid table.
Ina Verogiani, Lisa Pallavicinos, Daphne Pallavicinos, Nicolas Pallavicinos and Yolande Scheres picnicked in 1987 in an olive grove on the Greek island of Corfu. The caption lists five names; the photo shows six people, and who is who is not stated. The table runs straight across the image like a counter, and the gnarled trunks behind it lend the careful arrangement something wild.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
