About this work
Rosemary And Khaled Said, Marbella 1982
In a tall hall beneath an ornate octagonal ceiling, a woman in a magenta kaftan with a gold belt stands beside a sunken fountain. A boy in a light-blue shirt and jeans sits on the tiled edge. Ferns and bromeliads surround the basin. Behind them opens an alcove with draped curtains, a striped wall and low benches piled with cushions.
Rosemary Saïd, wife of the Syrian-Saudi financier Wafic Saïd, and her son Khaled relaxed in 1982 at Al-Khaldiah, their palace in the sun in the hills of Las Lomas near Marbella. The wide-angle lens lets the interior dominate: ceiling, alcove and fountain fill almost the whole frame. Mother and son are small at the bottom, but the magenta of her dress holds the eye.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
