About this work
Julie London, Beverly Hills Hotel 1957
Julie London lies in bed against pink pillows and a tufted headboard, in a white lace slip, her red hair pinned up and her lips painted red. In front of her stands a white wicker breakfast tray with a cup, a halved grapefruit, a silver coffeepot and a rosebud in a small vase. Behind her a lamp is lit and a landscape hangs in an ornately carved frame.
The singer Julie London had breakfast in bed at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1957. The image plays on the difference between softness and attention. Everything in the room is soft and pink, from the pillows to the roses on the nightstand, but her gaze is serious and goes straight into the lens. She holds the cup, yet the breakfast seems untouched.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
