About this work
Cocteau Collector, Marbella 1982
A woman in black with a white headscarf sits barefoot on a folding stool in front of a mural that covers almost the whole wall. On it women in polka-dot dresses dance among bulls and matadors, with the lettering of posters running through. On the left an old amphora stands in an iron stand, on the right a palm in a pot, and the floor is made of gray tiles.
August 1982: art collector Sylvia Coca sat in Marbella in front of one of Jean Cocteau's murals. Aarons places her exactly in the middle, small next to the work, so that she almost looks like a figure in the painting. Her white headscarf and black clothes repeat the line drawing behind her, which is also mostly white and black. The colorful bullfighters stay at the edges.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
