About this work
Palm Springs Tennis Club, 1970
From above you look across a row of tennis courts, grey-green against purplish red, where everyone plays in white. On the terrace in the foreground spectators sit in a row of chairs, a man in a blue sweater stands with his arms at his sides, and under a yellow parasol two people stand at a small stall. Behind the green screens, low white houses sit among palms.
In January 1970 Slim Aarons captured two doubles matches at a tennis club in Palm Springs, California. The high vantage point turns the courts into a floor plan: lines, nets and fences divide the picture into compartments, and something different happens in each. Players, waiting spectators and the stall under the parasol get equal room. You are not watching one match, but the whole club at once.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
