About this work
Snorkelling In The Shallows, Malta circa 1959
Looking down from above, you see water so clear that dark patches of seaweed stand out sharply on the bottom. Around a narrow wooden boat, snorkelers float with masks on their faces, one of them in a yellow swimming cap. In the boat stands a man in a hat and white shirt, and at the bow lie two large wicker baskets. Long oars stick out over the water.
According to the caption, a group of people went snorkeling from a small boat off Malta around 1959. Slim Aarons photographed it from high above, so the water almost disappears and the swimmers seem to hover over the seabed. The oars cross the frame as two diagonals and hold it together, with the boat as an anchor in the middle and the snorkelers around it like satellites.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
