About this work

Campbell Falls Picnic, Massachusetts 1959

A man in a gray sweater sits on a checkered blanket on the rocks, beside a wicker picnic basket. Two others sit next to him, one wearing a straw hat; a second hat lies on the stone. A girl in a red swimsuit stands behind them. Farther off, three children wade through the river, which flows down over broad slabs of rock beneath a canopy of trees.

This family picnicked in 1959 on the bank of the Whiting River at Campbell Falls in Massachusetts. Slim Aarons puts the group in the lower right corner and gives the rest of the square to the river, which slides forward from the back between the trees. The warm light turns the water into a gleaming path that leads your eye to the children at play. The picnic itself almost becomes a side matter.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
