About this work
Biarritz Seafront, 1960
A broad sandy beach curves along the sea, dotted with beach tents, parasols and bathers. Behind it stands a row of hotels and villas in pale stone, and on the right a low building with red awnings. To the left white waves roll in; in the foreground lies a wet flat reflecting the sky. A boulder on the right catches the low sunlight; a few people wade through the shallows.
The caption describes the beach and boulevard of Biarritz, France, in 1960. Slim Aarons stood high and at a distance, so the people shrink to dots and the town itself becomes the subject. The coastline draws a long curve through the picture, from the waves at lower left to the façades on the right. The warm light on the stone stands against the cool blue of the water.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
