About this work
Laguna Beach, 1970
From above you look down on a green lawn with a path of round stepping stones. Over those stones walks a woman in a white suit; ahead of her three guests in red and white stroll toward a round seating area with a semicircular white bench around a fire pit. Three others are already standing there, one with a glass in hand. Behind the glass balustrade the ocean glitters.
The caption speaks of a beachside garden in Laguna Beach, California, in January 1970. Slim Aarons chose a viewpoint directly above the path, so the stepping stones lead like a dotted line to the circle of the seating area, almost an exclamation mark. The guests follow that line in their red and white clothes, and the vivid green of the grass turns them into pawns on a game board.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
