About this work
Beverly Hills Hotel, Sunset Boulevard 1957
A gray-green wall of facade rises against a deep blue sky, with The Beverly Hills in white script letters across it. Right in front, a slender palm shoots up past the roof, its crown ragged with dry fronds. On the right, balconies with wrought-iron railings and planters jut out; at the edges of the picture two more palm trunks run along.
The sign on the side of the Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in California, photographed in 1957. Slim Aarons looks up from below, so that the facade towers over you like a monument. The palm climbing right beside the letters splits the picture in two: on the left the flat wall with the hotel's handwriting, on the right the layered balconies. That one thin trunk holds the composition together.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
