About this work
Sailboat In San Diego, 1960
On a broad sandy beach stands a flat little sailboat with a bright red triangular sail, decorated with a white fish. A toddler in white trousers stands on the hull and holds on to the mast. Two women in a white dress and a white swimsuit hold the boom and a line, laughing. Behind them people walk along the surf, and cliffs rise in the distance.
The caption names Mrs Cuddihy Perry, her son and Mrs George H. Gentry, who stood with a sailboat on the beach in San Diego in 1960. The text does not say which woman is which. The red sail takes up most of the picture and works like a wall against which the three figures look small. The smallest stands closest to the mast, as if he will soon be the skipper.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
