About this work
Lillian Crawford, Palm Beach 1970
On the steps of a swimming pool sits a woman with long blonde hair in a striped bikini, one leg drawn up, a pile of red towels beside her. In front of the steps stand two pots of yellow flowers. Beyond the blue water stands a red-roofed pavilion in pagoda style; on the right guests sit by a white house with a slate roof. To the left lies open water.
Lillian Crawford, wife of actor Lee Kinsolving, was photographed in Palm Beach in May 1970, the caption reports. She sits in front and looks into the lens, while the other guests are small figures across the water. The pool separates her from the party. That makes the whole look like a portrait with an entire estate as a backdrop, not a snapshot of a party.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
