About this work
Monte Carlo 1981
From high above the sea you look down on a beach crowded with people: towels, parasols, and in the middle a block of blue sun loungers. A narrow pier juts into the water toward a breakwater of stones. Behind it, tower blocks and long apartment buildings stand packed together against the green hillside, with a few older houses with red roofs among them.
Slim Aarons photographed the beach at Monte Carlo from the air in August 1981, with the high-rises rising behind it. The picture reads like a cross-section in layers: dark blue water, a turquoise edge, the pale strip of beach with bathers, and above it concrete climbing the hill. What makes it gripping is the proportion between those layers. The people are specks; the apartment blocks take up nearly half the frame.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
