About this work
Greek Monastery, Patmos 1983
On top of the hill stands a massive stone structure with battlements and a bell tower, gray and rough against a deep blue sky. Below it white houses pile up, with small windows, wooden shutters and here and there a red tile roof or an arched loggia. At the bottom, dark shrubs close off the picture. There is not a person in sight.
The Monastery of St John the Theologian towered over the town of Hora, on the Aegean island of Patmos, in September 1983, as the caption describes. The image is built so flat that houses and walls seem pressed into a single wall, with no depth between them. The contrast does the rest: gray stone above, whitewash below, and a dark blue sky that makes everything stand out sharply.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
