About this work
Waiting In The Shade, Costa Smeralda 1967
A woman sits on the sand under a white parasol, her back to the camera, on a turquoise cushion. Beside her lie a wicker basket, a white bag, a blue air mattress and a red towel. In front of her the water runs pale blue and clear to a black boat with a wooden mast and people on deck. Farther off more boats lie at anchor under a cloudless sky.
On a beach on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia, this woman took shelter under a parasol in 1967. The picture is upright, and Aarons lets it run in three bands: sand, water, sky. The woman sits at the bottom, her face turned from the lens, looking the same way you do: toward the water and the boat. That makes you, the viewer, part of the waiting the title speaks of.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
